Bio(medical)engineering Major

What is Bio(medical)engineering?

Bio(medical)engineering applies advances in science, engineering and technology to the solution of a broad range human, animal and plant problems. Advancements are being made in the field of bioengineering constantly. Much of the work in the field has to do with the relief of pain caused by diseases and injuries. The field of bioengineering has come under much stress and strain lately due to restrictions from the government and debates over stem cell research and cloning. Examples of the types of innovations being worked on by bioengeers include as designing process equipment and systems for biological production and treatment, or preparing sites for construction or remediation of environmental contamination, development of renewable sources of energy, and the improvement of foods.

Bio(medical)engineering engineering is more specifically directed at development to improve human health and well-being. This discipline may lead, for instance, to the development of of prosthetic limbs, synthetic heart valves, body analysis instrumentation, gene sequencing, and the application of nanotechnology for disease prevention and elimination.

Bio(medical)engineering is constantly growing and developing. A student who chooses to major in bioengineering enters a field where there is much exciting work with cells and laboratory research centering on cell and tissue engineering, biomechanics, neural engineering and rehabilitative engineering.

What Types of Positions do Bio(medical)engineering Majors Take After College?

These professions and professional organizations illustrate the types of positions you might qualify for if you complete this major. Some majors are more directly related to employment than others, however. You should consider the likelihood of employment after graduation carefully, if you do not plan to go on for graduate work in a field. Even with the completion of graduate work in some fields, however, employment is difficult, so you should determine what the prospects are for this or any major. Employment possibilities are often enhanced by the selecting employment-related courses and by the enrollment in second major or in a minor.
