Engineering Management Major

What is Engineering Management?

Engineering management prepares students to integrate management skills with engineering skills to solve complex problems in manufacturing, product development and service delivery. To be successful, a company must be able to efficiently produce its products. It must be able to create good product designs and convert them into workable production plans. This requires engineers with management skills who can design, develop, and improve production systems. These managers must assure the company that every product or service is of good quality and of reasonable cost.

Students in these fields must understand and be able to improve on modern manufacturing processes and systems, design tools and plan production. They must understand modern computer controlled manufacturing and know when and where to apply these technologies.

Universities offer a variety of programs that tie engineering to management. They may also be called industrial engineering, industrial systems engineering, and manufacturing systems engineering.
