Gender Studies Major
What is Gender Studies?
Students in this major will examine
differences between the experiences on men and women throughout
history and across cultures, races, and classes. These
majors study and generally, seek to assure, through research,
writing and action programs, to give equitable attention
to both genders. This major may be fall within a history
or political science department.

What Kinds of Students Major in
Gender Studies?
A major in gender studies offers an
opportunity for the interdisciplinary study of men and
women from various perspectives humanities, sciences,
and social sciences. Gender studies majors seek an understanding
of the new intellectual frameworks that are reshaping
thought about the meaning and role of gender in human
life. Majors pursue knowledge of gendered experiences
in diverse cultures and across time, examining the ways
in which race, social class, sexuality and ethnicity constitute
that experience. There is some crossover of interest by
students for whom gender and race relations is important.
Women tend to be open to the possibility of a major in
this field than are men.
