What is Speech and Hearing?
Speech and hearing majors concentrate
on speech pathology and audiology in order to assist people
suffering from communication disorders that may interfere
with a child's education, with an individual's ability
to function in society, or with the overall quality of
a person's life.. Students normally participate in clinical
work related to their studies. Interested students in
take courses in fundamental processes of normal speech,
language, and hearing: anatomy and physiology of the speech
and hearing mechanism, linguistics, acoustics, speech
perception, and speech and language development. Speech
and hearing departments are almost always associated with
clinics and patient services. Consequently, students may
also be involved in research projects. as well as in the
delivery of services. A minimum of a master's degree is
required for American Speech and Hearing Association (ASHA)
professional certification.

Students majoring in this major are
helping profession-oriented. Individuals who choose this
degree utilize their time helping individuals with hearing
or speech problems. Students of this field must be patient
and support of their clients in order to be successful
clinicians. Speech pathology and audiology also focuses
on language and non-language communication. These two
fields must be of some interest to the students pursuing
this degree. Students in this field will have a broad
exposure to the biological, behavioral, linguistic, and
social foundations of human communication. They should
look forward to careers and/or graduate education in fields
related to human communication, human resources, and health.
