What is an Undeclared Major?

From your responses, it was not possible for MyMajors to make a recommendation regarding your major. This is often partially due to a low grade point average and/or to low achievement test scores. Low scores will disqualify you from many majors that are highly competitive. Additional majors may have been eliminated because of the preferences you indicated.

MyMajors makes its recommendations based on the probability, not the certainty, that you are most likely succeed in certain majors. If you are committed to majors that were not recommended, you may well be able to succeed in that field. Motivation counts for a great deal. Still you should try to learn more about that discipline to be sure that you can thrive that major. Because many people’s impressions of a field are based on public media descriptions of what people do in an occupation, many students are not fully aware of the skills and attitudes that are required to be successful.

Although you may qualify to attend a college or university, it may be desirable for you to simply enroll without indicating a major. Register for courses that are required for you to graduate, regardless of your major. In this way, you give yourself time to select a major. You don’t lose time or waste effort enrolling in courses that may not contribute toward your eventual selection of a major. Once you are on campus, talk to other students about their majors. Find out why they like the major they selected or what they found they didn’t like when they selected a different major. Many students find that they settle on particular majors after they encounter a class or teacher that they really like.

Some schools have a degree program labeled “General Studies” or something like it, which a student can obtain a degree in without fully completing a specific major. Often, however, students are still required to accumulate some minimum number of credits in a single discipline.
