The 2024 Creative Outlook Cover Contest’s Peer Choice Award goes to Kylie Yoder, a sophomore studying at Kendall College of Art and Design.
Her winning piece, Metamorphosis, is a stunning digital illustration that captures the delicate process of a butterfly emerging from its chrysalis.
Yoder’s journey as an artist began early in life, with an instinctive love for color and creativity.
“Even as a preschooler, I loved colors and art. I used to line up my colored pencils and crayons by shades of color on the floor,” she recalls.
Encouraged by her high school art teacher, Mrs. Rilley, Yoder turned her passion for art into a career path, now pursuing a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Graphic Design.
Although her main medium is digital illustration, Yoder enjoys experimenting with different forms of art, including ceramics. The versatility of art school allows her to explore diverse media, but her love for illustration remains central.
Metamorphosis was the result of her first fully digital project during her first semester of art school. She watched videos of the butterfly hatching process and used that as inspiration to create a four-panel sequential drawing.
Yoder’s work is driven by the joy of creativity and the excitement that comes with working on projects. “It brings me so much joy,” she explains. It’s also been a source of stability during difficult times. She finds art to be a way to process emotions and work through life’s challenges.
“Art has sort of been my rock throughout hard times,” she says.
As she continues her studies in graphic design, Yoder has her sights set on a dream job in the music industry. With a deep appreciation for music, she aspires to work on album designs, especially those inspired by the elaborate packaging of Korean pop albums.
“I really love Korean pop album packaging, it’s so much more than just a jewel case and CD. There are lyric sheets, different outbox designs, posters, photobooks and so much more. I would love to be a part of that creative process,” she says.
