I am a human being, and as such, getting up early is not an adaptation nature has bestowed upon me. Sadly, I am also a junior with a first period, and that means rise and shine at 6:15.
When I got my schedule, I just imagined the headache, darkness (yeah, the sun is on a more lenient schedule than I am) and the cold. Of course, that was in the throes of August. Now, it’s been more than a month since I’ve been getting up that early, and honestly, that hour is the best hour of my day.
First, I am now the earliest riser in my family. The solitude I get at 6 am is complete and pristine. It almost feels like I am one of the first people up in the world, and that is an invigorating feeling.
Secondly, breakfast is now the tastiest meal of the day. Since I don’t eat a huge dinner, I’m quite famished by the time I wake up. Imagine then, how amazing a bowl full of carbohydrate and sugar enriched cereal with milk tastes. Yeah, it’s grrrrrreat.
Also, the darkness is not as terrible as you’d think. The darkness of night coupled with the soft light of early morning make it feel like a cloudy noon. For some reason, the mood demands peace and tranquility. It feels different to wake up and go through your paces slowly. I can sit and listen to some music, read the newspaper, or get more cereal. That hour in the morning is devoid of homework, chores, or noise. It is completely mine.
Hundreds of my classmates have a first period, but very few of them love the mornings like I do. Most of them struggle against the system and get up at seven and throw something on before running out the door. Others complain about the cold. And everyone complains about the headaches. Honestly, the reason why they have the headaches is because they’ve just gotten up into an uncomfortable situation. They’re drowsy, they were probably in the middle of an epic dream, but now they’re running out the door. The cure isn’t hibernating every morning (otherwise weekends would lose their purpose), but being optimistic. We’re not always in charge of our lives, and sometimes we are going to be put in situations we don’t like. My first period classmates who tend to be optimistic come to school smiling. If you have to wake up at six, wake up happy.
